Alkoomi Wines: Family Winery and Cellar Door in Frankland River WA
We are a family winery in Frankland River, at 1141 Wingebellup Road in Western Australia’s Great Southern. Four generations of our family have farmed this land, and we have been growing grapes here for more than fifty years. Our cellar door is open daily. You are welcome to taste with us, eat on the grass, stay the night, or simply take a bottle home.
A place we chose
Our family bought the original 1,220 hectare farm in 1946. It was Sandy’s grandparents, Vic and Netta, who took it on, and it was grandma Netta who chose the name Alkoomi for the property. The word means “a place we chose”, and is thought to be derived from a local Indigenous language. For its first decades this was a mixed grain and livestock farm. Then in 1971 Sandy’s parents, Merv and Judy, made the bold decision to plant one hectare each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling, along with a little Shiraz and Malbec. Those few hectares are the foundation of everything that came after.
Our first vintage as Alkoomi was in 1976, and in 2025 we celebrated our fiftieth vintage as a family winery. The story carries on with our oldest daughter Laura and her husband Tim, who have committed to follow in the family footsteps and bring their own passion and knowledge to what comes next. None of it would have happened without our team, who are like family to us, or without the support of the Frankland River community.
Our wines, our olive oil and our wine club
We make wine across several ranges: our Icon Range, our Family Collection, our Grazing Collection and our Cultivated Collection, alongside Museum Wines and a Picnic Range. We sell olive oil too, and gift cards if you are buying for someone else. Our online shop delivers, and if you would rather have wine arriving regularly, our Gathered and Grateful community hand select their favourites and have them delivered at a frequency of their choosing.
Visiting our Frankland River tasting room
Frankland River is our heart and home, and the tasting room here is where we would most like to see you.
What you can do at the winery
- Guided tasting or flight: taste through our wines with someone who knows them well.
- A local cheese board: eat it out on the grass, or cosied up by the fire.
- Private experiences: an in-depth tour and progressive tasting through our vineyards.
- A picnic in the olive grove: the casual, relaxed version of a day out here.
- Chalet accommodation: an isolated farm escape with minimal phone reception, fresh air and wide-open views. Good for a weekend in nature, or a night when you are passing through the Great Southern.
Our Frankland River cellar door is open daily, 10:00am to 4:30pm. Our admin and winery team are here Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Experiences and stays can be booked through our website.
Our Albany tasting room
If you cannot make it out to the farm, we keep a smaller tasting room in Albany, at 2/229 Lower Stirling Terrace, tucked away by the Old Gaol. It is open Monday to Saturday, 11:00am to 5:00pm, and you can taste there or pick up a bottle or a case. The number for that room is 0490 543 714.
