Green Skills Albany: Environmental Services and Landcare in Albany WA

We’re an environmental charity, and our Albany office sits on Graham Street at the corner of Barker Road in Centennial Park, about two kilometres out from the CBD. Green Skills Inc has been going since 1989 — more than thirty-six years of environmental work and community projects around Western Australia — and Albany is one of our three offices, alongside Denmark and Perth. If you’re after environmental services in Albany WA, whether that’s weed control on a difficult block or a revegetation plan for a whole reserve, this is where to start the conversation.

A charity that runs businesses and puts the money back

Our services are social enterprises, and that is not a slogan — 100% of the profits are reinvested into environmental and community projects. When you hire our crews, the surplus goes into landcare and community work in this part of the state rather than out to shareholders. We’re a registered environmental charity, and we publish our annual reports and governance documents on our website so you can see where things go.

What our crews actually do

Environmental services

  • Weed control: manual, mechanical and chemical, depending on the site and what’s growing on it.
  • Revegetation and planting: everything from tubestock to mature street trees, plus revegetation planning and site assessments beforehand.
  • Bushland, coast and parkland rehabilitation: natural areas maintenance, habitat enhancement and bush regeneration.
  • Fire mitigation: fuel load reduction, manual and mechanical, including establishment and maintenance.
  • Trails and infrastructure: trails maintenance, pathways, boardwalks and signage installation.
  • Surveys and plans: flora and fauna surveys, vegetation assessments, habitat mapping and monitoring, and preparation of Environmental Management Plans.
  • Erosion control and fencing: erosion prevention, and rural and conservation fencing including repairs, welding and gate installation.
  • Seed collection: licensed seed collection and processing services.
  • Wetland and river restoration: along with aquatic and land debris management.

We work for local, State and Federal government, private clients, educational institutions, industry partners and community friends-of groups. Green Skills states that it is a WA Local Government Association preferred supplier, which is often the practical starting point for council work.

Labour hire, and the venue at our Albany office

Through our Environmental Personnel Programs, run in both Perth and Albany, we can supply individual staff or whole teams for temporary or fixed-term work — bushland, parks and gardens, golf courses, plant nurseries and general labouring. We’ve been doing this for local governments in WA for over thirty years, and since 1989 our environmental personnel have put in more than 35,000 hours of landscape restoration and rehabilitation work.

The Albany office is also home to the Albany Community Enterprise Development Centre, a wheelchair accessible venue available for hire. It has a fully equipped commercial kitchen, free guest WiFi, an accessible bathroom with toilet and shower, a wall-mounted screen that takes an HDMI cable, a whiteboard, tables and chairs and a courtyard next door. It suits 15 to 20 people seated, or up to 30 with a mix of sitting and standing — good for a workshop, a meeting, an information session, or a cooking and food-preserving class, given the kitchen.

Projects, membership and getting in touch

Beyond the paid work, our projects include Landcare in the Great Southern, Refuse Reduce Reuse & Recycle, the Tootanellup Conservation Property, the Denmark Kwoorabup Community Garden and Totally Renewable Denmark. We also run the Denmark Tip Shop and Containers for Change refund points, and we have a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan setting out how we work alongside First Nations peoples.

If you’d like to join in rather than hire us, we take members and volunteers, and donations go to the same projects. For anything Albany — a quote, a booking, or a question about the work — ring (08) 9842 1334 or email [email protected].
