Three Anchors: breakfast and lunch on Middleton Beach, Albany
We are a restaurant on Middleton Beach at 2 Flinders Parade, Albany WA 6330, sitting among the tall Norfolk Island Pines on the shore itself. Middleton Beach is about 4km east of the Albany city centre. The Menang name for it is Binalup, meaning ‘morning light’, and if you are up early the sun rises over Mt Martin and sets the sand alight. We are open seven days.
Who comes through the door
People pick up a morning coffee on the way past. Friends meet here for breakfast mimosas on a birthday. Families bring the kids, or their parents or grandparents, in for lunch. Our menu is a long one and there is a little something on it for everyone. We think of Middleton Beach as the heart and soul of Albany: a safe swimming beach for locals and visitors alike, with the Ellen Cove to Albany Port boardwalk trail running from it, so the room fills with a mix of both.
The beach we sit on, and the whales that come into the bay
Middleton Beach is an accessible spot for watching Southern Right and Humpback whales on their annual migration to the Southern Ocean, from late May through to October. Whales come into the bay to rest, and can sometimes be seen as close as 20 to 30 metres from the shore, or further out in the deeper water. If you are choosing when to visit, that is the window worth knowing about.
The rest of the year the bay is no less busy. There is a pontoon out in the water and a jetty, bike paths along the front, and plenty of open coast for children to explore. The boardwalk has a string of viewing points that change with the season, which is why you will see as many cameras as coffee cups on it.
Breakfast and lunch seven days, and no dinner service
Our kitchen serves breakfast from 6.30am to 11am and lunch from 11.30am to 4pm, seven days a week. We do not serve dinner, and that is worth knowing before you plan an evening around us. There are separate breakfast, lunch and drinks menus, and every plate showcases local produce from the Great Southern region. We are licensed, with a bar and a beer garden.
The kiosk, and ordering ahead
Alongside the restaurant we run a kiosk, open every weekend and right through the school holidays, for quick and easy takeaway food and drinks. Functions and private events
Our three spaces for hire
- Restaurant and garden: standing or cocktail events for 80 to 120 people, with windows spanning the length of the restaurant and views over Middleton Beach. Hire comes with catering options, a licensed bar and exclusive use of the beer garden and stage, weather permitting. Well suited to weddings, birthdays, and larger corporate and community events.
- Corporate room: seats up to 25, or 35 standing, at the northern end of the venue. Completely private, with windows overlooking Middleton Beach, and hire includes free use of our smart TV, wifi and whiteboard. Built for small corporate events and meetings, with catering options available.
- Southern alfresco: seats up to 30 at picnic-style tables looking over the playground and the newly developed Middleton Beach front. Good for afternoon sundowners, work get-togethers and children’s birthday parties.
Hire prices for the restaurant are available on request, and a minimum number of guests or a minimum spend applies and varies seasonally. The corporate room and the southern alfresco are hired by the hour, with discounted rates for half-day, full-day and multiple-day bookings of the corporate room.
