We are a small, owner-run building business working across Albany and the Great Southern. Bill Terjesen is the builder, and he is the person you deal with from the first conversation onwards. What we do is custom home building in Albany WA — new houses, substantial renovations, and the carpentry that sits behind both.
From carpentry to custom houses
Bill trained as a carpenter, picking it up through school woodwork, starting a work experience placement in year 10 and finishing his apprenticeship ahead of schedule. He set up on his own in 2009 as Bill’s Contracting, doing general carpentry across residential and commercial jobs and putting apprentices through along the way. The business was later renamed Terjesen Constructions, and the work shifted with it — away from general contracting and towards building quality houses at the higher end.
The sort of jobs we take on
Past work around Albany gives a clearer picture than any description would. There is a 320-square-metre bed and breakfast at Kalgan, timber framed with a 40-degree roof pitch. There is a renovation on Wylie Crescent that meant taking an asbestos roof off and re-sheeting it. There is work at Middleton Beach. New builds, serious renovations and the awkward jobs in between — that is the range.
A small team, and the builder on site
We keep the team deliberately small and put money into training the people in it. Bill’s way of running a job is to keep the client in it rather than out of it: in his words, “I get them involved in the whole process, show them what we’re doing.” He reckons 98 per cent of the work comes through word of mouth, and the plan from here is fewer, bigger jobs done properly rather than a lot at once.
