A.D. Contractors: Earthmoving and Civil Contractors in Albany WA
We are an earthmoving contractor in Albany WA, working from a yard and workshop at 18 Kelly Street and covering a radius of roughly 200 kilometres from there. Brian Attwell founded the business in 1970, and it is still a family business, with his son Ian Attwell as Operations Manager and Director. Our main focus is civil earthmoving, plant hire and demolition, and we also supply raw materials out of our own pits. The office number is 08 9841 2399.
Fifty-odd years of Great Southern roads and earthworks
Most of what we have built is within driving distance of the yard. Recent jobs include trunk drainage and runway remediation at Albany Airport and the taxiway, RFDS apron and access road there for the City of Albany; the wastewater treatment plant reconstruction for Water Corporation with Guidera O’Connor; 12.7 kilometres of reconstruction on Lower Denmark Road; the Walpole airstrip upgrade for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions; and 1.6 kilometres of widening and cycle paths on Port Road for Main Roads with Fulton Hogan. We have also done the carpark upgrades at Albany Senior High School, the Anzac Road and carpark work at Mount Clarence, and the boat ramp and revetment at Colemine Beach in Walpole.
The client list runs from state agencies through to local shires and civil contractors: Water Corporation, Western Power, Southern Ports, Forest Products, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the City of Albany, the Shires of Denmark, Plantagenet and Broomehill-Cranbrook, and private firms including Arc Infrastructure, Fulton Hogan, Guidera O’Connor, Leicon Notley and Densford Civil.

The yard, the fleet and the people
The Kelly Street site holds our administration office, an engineering and operations room, a 1,000 square metre workshop set up for heavy duty servicing and repairs, and a 16,000 square metre work yard. Keeping the workshop in house is what lets us run an older, larger fleet reliably rather than hiring in.
That fleet includes ten front end loaders, three graders, bulldozers from D6 size upwards, excavators fitted with rock breakers, prime movers with end tipping, side tipping and low loader trailers, six-wheeler trucks that can be fitted with water tankers, semi water tankers, a six-wheeler computerised metal spreading apparatus, self-propelled rollers, and the crushing and screening plants.
We employ more than 40 staff: four in the office, five in the mechanical workshop including an apprentice, a boilermaker and fabricator, 24 plant operators and eight semi and truck drivers, and we take work experience placements from Great Southern TAFE. Ian Attwell started here as an apprentice in 1984 and now handles operations and safety. Our Project Engineer, Helen O’Neill, is a civil engineer who has worked on major road contracts in Albany, including time as Engineering Design Officer at the City of Albany. Jason Dayman, our Works Supervisor, runs the day to day work on site across earthworks, road construction, drainage, sewer and demolition.
