Smith Thornton: Accountants in Albany WA
We are an accounting practice at 234 Stirling Terrace, Albany. Smith Thornton was first established in Albany in 1996 by Simon Smith and Dean Thornton, and we work as accountants in Albany for local businesses, primary producers, self managed superannuation funds and individuals across the Great Southern.
Our Team
The practice is led by four partners: Dean Thornton, founding partner, CPA; Rebecca Williss, FCPA; Amy Sims, CA; and Ryan McLaren, CA. Behind the partners sit our accounting, business advisory, bookkeeping and administration teams, more than twenty people in all, working from the one Stirling Terrace office rather than from a city head office.
Accounting, Tax and Business Services
What we do
- Accounting and bookkeeping: we prepare periodic and annual financial reports for tax, banking needs and business appraisal, and we can take on the bookkeeping and accounting work outright rather than leaving it with you and your staff.
- Taxation: income tax return preparation and advice on payment of tax, activity statements, GST and FBT obligations, Wine Equalisation Tax, the Fuel Tax Credit Scheme, tax legislation research and interpretation, development of tax minimisation strategies, and management of ATO audits or disputes.
- GST: advice on registering and deregistering for GST, the GST consequences of complex transactions, lodging and amending returns, and ATO audit assistance. GST is a complex system, so we keep up with the changes as they come.
- Companies and trusts: company establishment, general advice on company law, filing annual returns, minutes and resolutions, statutory books, share transfers, changes of directors and shareholders, and a registered office facility. For trusts we handle formation, administration, documentation, reporting, taxation and asset management.
- Superannuation: establishing self managed superannuation funds, completing information for the Australian Taxation Office, superannuation audits, compliance and taxation advice, employer obligations, and the setup and maintenance of aged pensions.
- Business advisory: entity structure reviews, finance assistance, grants and tenders, management reporting, IT system reviews and software selection, and advice on starting or ceasing a business.
Working Through the Life of a Business
Our services are grouped roughly the way a business actually moves. Starting or ceasing business covers the set-up and the wind-down. Strategic business advisory and management reporting cover the years in between, with periodic management accounts to help monitor the key areas of a business.
Entity structure review is there for when the shape a business started with no longer fits, and we assess the opportunities and consequences of restructuring one or all of your entities. Where finance is involved, we help work through the financing options for personal and business goals. Where a grant or tender is in play, we help collate the information required and prepare the application and supporting documents. Where the software has stopped suiting the job, we look at suitability, setup, structure, automation and backups, and can handle selection, installation, configuration and staff training.
Industries We Work In
We do industry specific accounting for health services, hospitality and tourism, primary production, retail and vineyard businesses, which is much the mix you would expect around the Great Southern. We also work on rental property matters, from purchase advice and funding through to ownership structure and forecasts.
