Sugg’s Timber Machining & Joinery: Custom Timber Work in Albany WA
We are at 432 Albany Highway, and we have been providing custom timber machining and joinery to this region since 1990. Rogan and Jen Coffey bought the business in 2019 and have kept it doing what it always did – both traditional and modern timber joinery in Albany, custom designed with the customer rather than chosen from a catalogue. Both are locally born and bred in the region, and they are now raising their three boys in Albany. A front door, a run of skirting to match an old house, a bench top out of a slab: they all start the same way, with a conversation about what the timber has to do.
Bring us your own timber
Not every job starts with our timber. Plenty begin with somebody turning up with their own – a slab off a farm, boards saved out of a demolition, something that has been sitting in a shed for years – and we machine it for them. Dressing, levelling, filling, jointing and sanding are all part of that service. We also run a large scale CNC machine that levels timber slabs ready for custom furniture making, which is the fiddly part of turning a rough slab into a table top that sits flat.
What we make
Our work falls into three groups: timber fixtures for a house, custom joinery, and machining timber you already have.
Our main lines of work
- Doors: entry, pivot, barn, sliding, bi-fold and internal solid doors, plus flyscreen doors and frames, with a choice of glazing and hardware.
- Windows: casement, double hung, awning, sliding and gas strut servery windows, along with flyscreens and glazing options.
- Staircases and balustrades: internal or external, in hardwood timber, MDF or on a steel frame, with handrails and balustrade infills including stainless steel wire and glass.
- Skirting, architraves and floorboards: we can replicate an existing profile and size, or customise one to suit – useful when you are patching into a room built long before anything was standardised.
- Custom joinery: tables, benchtops, shelving and cabinets.
- Timber machining: dressing, levelling, filling, jointing and sanding of timber you supply.
The timber, and the finish that goes on it
There is a large variety of hardwood to choose from here, including locally sourced, recycled and imported hardwood timbers. For finishing we use and recommend Osmo oil and wax. The oil penetrates into the surface and protects the wood from deep within, while the waxes form an elastic, microporous surface that keeps out external moisture and stands up to abrasion. The practical part, and the reason we favour it, is that an Osmo finish can be renovated at any time without sanding the piece back. Osmo is available in store, and we can custom order to suit what you are doing.
Residential, commercial and heritage work
Our team is a dedicated group of local carpentry and joinery tradespeople, and the work has taken in residential, commercial and heritage projects. Heritage jobs are where the profile matching earns its keep – an old house rarely has a moulding you can buy off the rack, and reproducing one properly is a machining job rather than a shopping trip.
We can provide a supply only service or a complete supply and install option, including retrofitting to an existing house or opening. That last part is the harder half of the work and the question people usually ring to ask: an opening in a house built decades ago is rarely square, and fitting a new door or window into it properly is a different job from hanging one in a new frame. Where you already have a builder or cabinet makers engaged, we work together with them as required, and we can guide you through the process of your custom works and provide ideas and options to suit your personal style and budget.
Coming in to see us
The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, at 432 Albany Highway. If you are starting something new, we would rather you made an appointment, so there is time to go through the drawings or look at the timber properly. Ring (08) 9842 2173 or email [email protected]. Let the natural beauty of timber enhance your home is the line on the front of our website, and it has been the job here since 1990.
