MCC Contractors: Civil Construction and Earthmoving in the Great Southern
We are a family-owned civil construction and earthmoving contractor in the Great Southern, based at Unit 1, 105 East River Road in Denmark and working across Western Australia. Founded in 1997, we handle roads, drainage, culverts, bulk earthworks, vegetation and fire mitigation, haulage and disaster recovery for councils, government agencies and larger contractors.
From Timber Tracks to Civil Infrastructure
We started as a timber and forestry operation and grew from there into full-scope civil work. The business is still family run. Our director and owner, Matthew Candy, has more than 28 years leading civil construction projects across roadworks, subdivisions, drainage and bulk earthworks, and is a hands-on director rather than an office one. Phill Lewis, our operations manager, came up through the civil earthmoving industry and looks after compliance, fleet and asset management.
Owning our own fleet matters more than it sounds. It means the machines, floats and drivers on your job are ours, so timing, cost and safety stay under our control instead of hanging on someone else’s schedule.

What We Take On
- Major civil works: full infrastructure packages from groundworks through to asphalt, including road construction and reconstruction, culvert and drainage reinstatement, and asphalt prep and seal repairs under council and government contracts.
- Minor civil works: driveways, kerbing, footpath reinstatement and repairs, and small drainage projects for homeowners, businesses and shires.
- Vegetation and fire mitigation: firebreak creation and maintenance, roadside clearing and slashing, and mulching and replanting, using purpose-built mulchers and slashing gear built for rugged country.
- Haulage and float services: float and materials delivery, equipment mobilisation, and hauling gravel and fill for councils, developers and worksites across regional WA.
- Flood and storm damage repair: fast mobilisation to restore flood-damaged infrastructure, clear roads and support fire and storm recovery programs.
- Subcontracting and site services: site crews, haulage, vegetation and earthworks for Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors delivering remote and regional work.
Who We Work For
Most of our work comes from local and state government, emergency and recovery programs, and other civil contractors. We are WALGA prequalified and DFES registered, which is what lets us take on shire and agency scopes and turn out for bushfire and flood response. Beyond that we work across construction, local government, infrastructure, mining, utilities, commercial and transport clients, and a good share of them come back to us for the next job. Projects We Have Delivered
Three of these are worth setting out, because they show the range better than any list can.
Eulup-Manurup Bridge Replacement, Shire of Plantagenet, 2026. The Hay River crossing on Eulup-Manurup Road had reached the end of its working life. We delivered site establishment, service identification and relocation, dewatering, construction of a temporary river bypass, demolition of the existing crossing, installation of a new reinforced concrete culvert structure, pavement reconstruction, scour protection works and Main Roads WA compliant safety barriers – all of it inside a live watercourse, which is the part that governs how the job is sequenced.
Flood Recovery Works, Shire of Yalgoo, from July 2024. We were sole contractor reinstating 30 flood-damaged roads spread across 33,000 square kilometres: reshaping drains, reconstructing pavements, replacing culverts and re-sheeting gravel. It was a $4.7M scope with a twelve-month window set by the disaster recovery funding, and we delivered it three months ahead of schedule. Remote camps were established on site, construction water was sourced by drilling bores and building Turkey Nest dams, and we partnered with locals to supply plant and labour.
Flood Damage Rehabilitation, Shire of Beverley. More than 100mm of rain and hail fell in two days in March 2023 and damaged over 130 road sites across the Shire. Working with HC Constructions, we began in September 2024 on a $6.4M, twelve-month program. Our crew ran a 10:4 drive-in drive-out roster, jet-washed more than 500 culverts, reinstated 40km of shoulders and drainage and addressed six major flood sites, and finished four months ahead of schedule and under budget.
Recent Work and Getting a Quote
A current example closer to home is Kearsley Estate in Denmark, a 44-lot residential subdivision on the southern slopes of Mount Shadforth, less than two kilometres from the town centre. We began civil works in late 2025 and are delivering the full scope in stages: bulk earthworks, land excavation, road formation, and deep sewer, water and power run to each allotment boundary. When it finishes in mid-2026 the estate will hand over 44 serviced blocks of roughly 996 to 1,409 square metres.
