Lothlorien Studio: Wrought Iron and Woodwork at Takalarup WA
Lothlorien Studio is the working studio of artist blacksmith and woodworker Dave Taylor, at 150 Pettit Rise, Takalarup, looking out to the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges. It is where our wrought iron and woodwork in the Great Southern gets made — by hand, on the anvil.
A strawbale studio built for the work
Dave built the rendered strawbale studio and workshops here himself, to pursue his passions for wrought iron and woodwork. The natural warmth and cave-like rustic charm of a strawbale building, the panoramas out to the ranges and the ring of hammer on anvil add up to something you will not find anywhere else in the Great Southern.
Hammer and hand
The work is done with the traditional blacksmithing techniques of hammer and hand, using beautiful local and recycled timbers and hand-rubbed finishes. Every piece is bespoke, and the craft is built around three things Dave holds to: craftsmanship, artistic individuality and environmental awareness.
What comes off the anvil
- Sculpture: pieces combining wood and wrought iron.
- Entry statements: commissioned pieces marking the entrances to local towns.
- Furniture and home adornments: made in timber and iron.
- Gates and railings: hand-forged wrought iron for the house and the property.
- Damascus blades: hand-forged, layered Damascus, made for chefs through to collectors.
Commissioning a piece, or coming out to the studio
