Monty’s Leap: Cellar Door and Cool Climate Wines at Kalgan, Albany WA
We are a family-owned and family-run winery near Albany, on the banks of the Kalgan River at 45821 South Coast Highway, Kalgan. We make cool climate Great Southern wines, handcrafted here on our hill above the river, with our own vineyard on the property, and our cellar door is open for tastings and for buying a bottle or a case to take away.
A leap of faith on the Kalgan
Michelle and Phil bought this property in 2017, merging two lifelong dreams. It was a rare opportunity, and a big leap of faith. They worked together with local builders to renovate and add to the building that was already standing here.
The cellar door features upcycled materials that have been given a new life. Old timbers were reused from structures such as the Emu Point Jetty and the Maylands Traffic Bridge, which ties in well with how close we sit to the river and to its history.
Michelle, Phil and our team have stayed focused on providing a quality experience, bringing the best of what they have seen in Australia and around the world to our hill here on the Kalgan. That is not just the wine. It is the service, and the general feel of the place. We are motivated by building lasting new relationships and creating new family traditions, with local residents and with visitors to the region alike.
Our wines
What we pour and sell
- Sparkling: our Monty’s Leap Sparkling.
- Whites: Sauvignon Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend, and a Late Harvest Riesling.
- Rose: released across several vintages.
- Reds: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, our Far King Shiraz, and The Sailor, a Cabernet Shiraz blend.
You can buy our wines at the cellar door or through our online wine shop, and we sell vouchers if you are buying for someone else. Our wine is also produced and distributed to liquor stores, restaurants, bars and accommodation across Western Australia and beyond, and there is a stockist locator on our website if you would rather pick a bottle up closer to home. Every couple of months our team sends out special offers on wines, with no commitment attached.
The wine club
Members choose between six or twelve bottles every three, six or twelve months, and the packs can be updated between deliveries depending on your mood, the time of year or an occasion coming up. There are three to pick from: Choose Your Own, the Premium Pack and the Fun Pack. Membership brings discounts on all wines, free shipping within Australia, exclusive first access to each new vintage release, early release of special event tickets, and a discount on takeaway wine at the cellar door. Our vintage packs are currently fully subscribed, so ask our cellar club team about the waiting list.
Visiting the cellar door
The cellar door sits above the banks of the Kalgan River, an easy 20km drive from the heart of Albany, and the view from it takes in rolling hills, the Kalgan and our vineyard. Tastings are curated by our winemaking and cellar door team.
Our opening days alternate from week to week rather than sitting still, so it is worth a look before you drive out. The pattern runs Wednesday to Friday, 10:00am to 3:00pm, one week, then Thursday to Saturday, 10:00am to 3:00pm, the next, and the banner at the top of our website says which week it is.
One thing worth knowing before you visit: the restaurant on the property closed in August 2025, after five years of service. We gave the reasons at the time as family commitments, personal health, recent staff changes, and a sense of accomplishment for what we set out to achieve, and the premises are now available for lease. It is business as usual in the vines and barrels, so for the moment a visit here is about the wine and the setting rather than a meal.
